You might be wondering: What is the cost of the PMP(r), exam? It would be worth the time and money investment. Would it make a difference in my career?
The PMP(r), although not required for many project management roles is becoming more common.
For example, the U.S. government and Canadian governments would not award contracts to parties that do not have PMP(r), certified project managers.
Why?
Because they want people to have the right education and training to manage projects.
The PMP(r), certification is highly valued in the industry. At a minimum, getting certified is a nice-to have that shows you understand how to manage projects.
The PMP(r), or Professional Management Practitioner, requires approximately 100 hours of study and $1000 investment.
Let’s break it down into two categories: time and money.
Time
You must have 35 hours of formal project management education to be eligible for the PMP(r). These hours can be obtained through PMP(r), prep courses such the ones offered by ExamsPM.
You will need to spend some time understanding and memorizing the concepts, as well as practicing questions (I recommend at least 1000 questions). This process can take between 50 and 100 hours.
Money
A PMI membership costs $139 USD. The first year of membership to PMI is recommended because you will save $150 USD on exam fees. This membership really does pay for itself. You will also receive an e-copy the PMBOK(r), guide.
The exam costs $405 USD if you are a PMI member. If you are not a PMI Member, the cost to write the exam is $555.
An online course and exam simulator cost between $250-350 USD, depending on which provider you use. ExamsPM offers courses at a very affordable price.
You can also buy a PMP(r), certification book. These books are available for purchase at Amazon starting at $50 to $100.
The cost of an in-person training course will vary depending on the provider. It can cost anywhere from $800 to 2000 USD.
Add all of these costs together and you will need to budget approximately $1000 USD to become PMP(r). This is the total cost of the PMP(r), exam.
