A new report by Synergy Research Group states that Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), continues to be the dominant cloud platform in the increasingly globalized public cloud computing market.
The new study confirms past research and shows that it is still a three-horse race with AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform leading — except in Asia Pacific, where newcomer Alibaba continues making noises.
The increasing globalization of public cloud space in that region isn’t as evident as it is in the other three regions studied by Synergy.
The company stated that Asia Pacific was the only region where the ranking differs due to the prominence of China and the dominance by local cloud providers in China. “This results in Alibaba being ranked number two in the APAC region, and fourth globally. Tencent, Salesforce, IBM and Salesforce fill the remaining five top spots in the regions. This is due to China’s position.

Although Synergy stated that public cloud computing is essentially a global market without much local differentiation, the top five cloud service providers in China are all local businesses.
Synergy measured revenue for public Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) in its Q1 2018 report, published last month.
John Dinsdale, chief analyst and research director at Synergy, stated that “this is a game on scale and to become a market leader requires vast ongoing investments, global presence and a worldwide brand.” “There will be many local issues that may allow local companies to take over niche positions, but they will still be small local players in a particular country or sub-region. In such cases, global leaders can often use different local strategies to help them succeed. This market is truly global, with the exception of China.
